Uncovered Interest Parity in Crisis

چکیده
Abstract This paper tests for uncovered interest parity (UIP) using daily data for twenty-three developing and developed countries through the crisis-strewn 1990s. We find that UIP works better on average in the 1990s than in previous eras in the sense that the slope coefficient from a regression of exchange rate changes on interest differentials yields a positive coefficient (which is sometimes insignificantly different from unity). UIP works systematically worse for fixed and flexible exchange rate countries than for crisis countries, but we find no significant differences between rich and poor countries.

متن کاملThe Uncovered Interest Rate Parity Puzzle in the Foreign Exchange Market
This paper focuses on the theory of uncovered interest rate parity and whether interest-rate differentials have resulted in the higher interest rate currency depreciating over time. Previous literature has empirically rejected the theory indicating that higher interest rate currencies have actually appreciated relative to lower interest rate currencies. In this paper, uncovered interest rate pa...
متن کاملFinancial Integration from a Time-varying Cointegration Perspective
This paper applies a time-varying cointegration (TVC) model to study regional financial integration, measured by the drifting cointegration coefficient of the long-term interest rates between Singapore and Malaysia. Conditioned on long-run exchange rate equilibrium, the evolving relation can be used to test the hypothesis of uncovered interest parity (UIP) in the strong and weak forms, and exam...
متن کاملThe Extrapolative Component in Exchange Rate Expectations and the Not-So-Puzzling Interest Parity: The Case of Uruguay
This paper analyses the importance attached to the past behaviour of the exchange rate when forming expectations and tests for the uncovered interest parity hypothesis. Using interest rate differentials for Uruguay over 1980-2010, we identify a strong and time-varying extrapolative component in exchange rate expectations. Agents attach more importance to the past behaviour of exchange rates the...
